Jane Campion’s initial plan for Top of the Lake, her SundanceTV drama about sexual violence in a rural New Zealand town, was for the story of haunted detective Robin Griffin (Elisabeth Moss) to come to a full stop at the end of the first and only season. As the survivor of a teenage gang rape, Robin tackled the painful reverberations of her trauma and battled her fellow officers’ shrugging indifference while investigating a 13-year-old’s pregnancy — and later, the missing girl’s whereabouts. Gorgeous and lonely-making Kiwi mountainscapes, plus a thoroughly original character in Holly Hunter’s guru-crone (who teasingly resembled Campion herself), helped smooth out the considerable kinks in that indelible 2013 season. Nearly half a decade after, Top of the Lake returns with a subtitle, China Girl, and a question, at least in this critic’s mind, of whether the director of Bright Star and the Palme d’Or-winning The Piano should have stuck with her original intent. With the faults of the first season magnified, China Girl is probably more of an interesting failure than an outright mess — but not by much. Moss will probably square off against herself (in The Handmaid’s Tale) in the 2017 best-of-year rankings. But the Sydney-based sequel’s fervid evocation of invisible, destabilizing pain is diminished by a thematic incoherence and a preposterous mystery with more loose ends than a mop. What are the chances that, five years after uncovering a pedophile ring involving a member of her own family, a detective would stumble on a human-trafficking ring (in which paid sex might be the least grimy thing on offer) involving a different family member? Best Global Taiwan Brands 2017. Campion and her co-writer Gerard Lee ask viewers to overlook several such coincidences to get the new season rolling. A teal plastic suitcase with long Asian hair spilling out washes up on shore. We know that the pregnant body inside — dubbed “China Girl” by the medical examiner — comes from a brothel. It takes Robin and her puppy-dog-eager protege Miranda ( Game of Thrones’ Gwendoline Christie) — expecting a child herself — some time to figure out that the woman stuffed inside the suitcase had been a pregnancy surrogate. (In contrast to most of the U.S., prostitution is legal and surrogacy is illegal in Sydney.). You have successfully signed up for your selected newsletter(s) - please keep an eye on your mailbox, we're movin' in! On her press tour for this season, Campion has regaled interviewers with a tale of how she “snuck” into an Asian-Australian bordello to get a better sense of the sex-work trade there. But the China Girl case often seems like an afterthought. Campion’s concern comes across — we’re certainly given lots of background on how girls and women from Southeast Asia enter Australia on student visas — but the filmmaker finds little new to say about female exploitation or agency. None of the Thai prostitutes who work at the brothel, though seen in virtually all six episodes, get developed enough to even be sorted into archetypes.

A BIG SMILE IN A SMALL FACE 'A Big Smile in a Small Face' was an initiative started by the Directors of The Spanish Institute of Puebla and their daughter, born out of a desire to give to some of the less fortunate children of Mexico a reason to smile. So using a tradition in Mexico, by which, the Three Wise Men: Melchior, Gaspar and Balthazar bring toys to the children on January 6th of each year; we have picked this time of the year to dress up as the Three Wise Men and show up at poor communities, unannounced, to hand out blankets, shoes, food, toys and other gifts for the poor children of Mexico. With private resources and with the help of cash donations, toy donations, shoe donations, etc. And with the great help of over 29 volunteers we were able to hand out, in our 10th year, around 4,650 toys, 800 pairs of shoes, 800 ponchos made out of wool, over 365 Roscas de Reyes (a pastry traditionally eaten to celebrate the Epiphany), cloths, books, etc. Of course this project would not be a reality without the great help of our donors, friends and volunteers to which we want to express our complete gratitude on behalf of our team and of the most needed children in Mexico that we have all made smile. Being a fan of both the Flash series and the flash-point paradox in the comics, I can sum this season so far as.interesting. Savitar isn't seeming nearly as scary nor as brutal as Zoom or even Thawne was, but he's still intimidating since he knows certain details about the team. On a technical note: is this the first episode where Savitar is not completely animated? I feel like I'm watching a power rangers episode. Good show, really hoping they execute the ending well, but the Savitar attire is really going to throw me off if the armor looks plush. Prod Co Bingchi Pictures Co., Ltd. Until recently, my workplace was a desk in a modern co-working space with fancy chairs, free coffee and popcorn Wednesdays. I am a playwright, which isn’t technically a job, it’s more of an affliction (or infliction, depending on the day). Once upon a time, I had a home office in the shape of a second bedroom that I reluctantly gave up once my child learned to speak and say, “I have no room for my toys”. Playwriting is not a high stakes game. The money is generally terrible, the productivity is usually low, and the impact on the world economy is minimal. You write plays because you have to. And also maybe because you are qualified for absolutely nothing else but mostly because it is, sadly, a sort of sadistic calling. This, in itself, is stressful. What I wouldn’t give to have been born a banker, or a doctor, or anything other than a woman who wants to write things and get paid for it. I live in New York, one of the greatest cities in the world. And it is great. It’s an amazing place full of adventure, wonder, and excitement. Comedy Several love stories set in one of the most loved cities of the world, New York City. I have everything on my doorstep and not one drop of time to do any of it because for me, and the almost nine million other inhabitants of New York, this is Work Town. • • • I emigrated here in 2010 with a proud sense of my own work ethic. I realised pretty quickly that a whole chunk of New York has only two modes: working and (trying to) sleep. Workdays bleed into nights and erode any sense of on/off. In this city, you’re constantly on. Laptops and phones are often on in my home at 11pm because careers don’t build themselves and it’s still office hours somewhere on the planet. People in New York go to enormous lengths to cope with the stress of living in New York, myself included. There’s a group or class for almost any type of stress-reduction and I’d bet that at least half the city is medicated. Every night in New York is a battle for rest in the city that never sleeps. Some nights it’s a construction site at full throttle at 3am, others it’s a car alarm, a casual street fight, an impatient taxi-driver, or sometimes it’s street karaoke night. This city’s endless capacity to exhaust its citizens is astounding. In my 20s, work-life balance was something you had in your 30s. On the cusp of not being in my 30s anymore, I stare at those two words as though they are two unicorns standing on a rainbow. From where I’m sitting (slouched at my kitchen table), there is no work-life balance in New York. But this city never promised that. It never said, “come to New York where everything will be harmonious and you’ll feel super chill”. You know why you come to this city: for the madness of it all, for the undiluted craziness of millions of people trying to get coffee or a box of pre-washed kale at the same time. In October 2015, I jumped into the deep end of activism with #WakingTheFeminists. The time difference between Dublin and New York gave me extra hours in the day to throw everything I had at this thing that I cared so passionately about. At the same time, I wrote a TV pilot, rewrote a play, helped my daughter start school, became a basketball coach, spoke at events and generally got into trouble. When Dwight Eisenhower was elected president in 1952, outgoing president Harry Truman of an important secret: Days before the election the United States had tested the world’s first hydrogen bomb in the Pacific. The nation now possessed a weapon roughly a hundred times as powerful as any before—and almost nobody else knew. Eight years later, when Eisenhower handed the keys to John F. Kennedy, his administration passed along its own secret: America had a covert plan underway to invade Cuba. Kennedy let the Bay of Pigs mission proceed, and the result was a fiasco that would take the world to the brink of nuclear war. Story Continued Below. The president of the United States has more access to official secrets than any other human being in the country—and the potential to know more about the world than anyone else on the planet. And on January 20, the person being handed access to all of those secrets will be Donald J. While much attention has been focused on Trump’s access to the nuclear launch codes and the President’s Daily Brief—the classified intelligence report delivered inside a locked briefcase each morning to the Oval Office—those represent only a tiny sliver of the massive top-secret universe that Trump personally will suddenly be privy to. He will have the ability to see inside the most sensitive and covert programs run by the United States and its allies around the world; he will have access to surveillance tools, covert payrolls and personal secrets about foreign leaders. He will know about blacked-out special forces raids and UFO-like spy planes, the next-generation cyberattacks that would come in the opening minutes of a new war, and the dozens of secret classified procedures and laws written down by his presidential predecessors. He’ll even be first in line for some mundane but important things: As president, Trump will be to learn sensitive market-moving economic data from the Labor Department up to 12 hours before it is released publicly. The United States has invested trillions of dollars to ensure that its president can know more than anyone else on Earth—knowledge meant to be deployed to the country’s advantage in trade negotiations, military posturing and a thousand other ways big and small. Given Trump’s behavior so far, it seems almost assured that he will deploy and weaponize those same secrets in “unpresidented” ways, to win personal fights and minor PR battles. Already, before taking office, he has tweeted out claims about his meetings with intel agencies, asserted that he knows information the rest of the government doesn’t and tried to embarrass and undermine rivals or critics through insinuation. And that’s all before he has learned any of what President George W. Bush once called “the good stuff.” What is the good stuff, and how might Trump use it? About Shadow Government. Shadow Government is a blog about U.S. Foreign policy in the age of Trump, written by experienced policymakers, scholars. As detailed in previous episodes, there are members of all branches and numerous departments of the U.S. Government who are meeting in various locations in and around Washington, DC, strategizing to subvert the agenda of Donald Trump and patriotic Americans. HAIM • • • • • Even before the 2013 release of HAIM’s celebrated, best-selling debut album, Days Are Gone, the group had already started touring. And then they never stopped—in the years since, Alana, Danielle, and Este Haim have stayed on the road almost constantly, “People kept asking us to tour,” says Alana, “and it was a no-brainer, because we love playing so much.” So when it came time to put on the brakes and make the hotly anticipated follow-up, Something to Tell You, the sisters wanted to try a different approach, taking advantage of the performing strength they had gained. “On the first record, we were messing around a lot with production and samples,” says Danielle. “Now, coming off of three years of touring, we thought. ‘Let’s just go in and record as a band, keep it a little more organic.’ That was a mission statement for the album.” The results demonstrate the musical and emotional range of a group that continues to push its own creativity.
